Imagine having a conversation when suddenly a steamroller passes by, disorienting and confusing you. For most people, this would be a strange and unsettling experience. Yet, many marine animals face a similar challenge every day. Man-made noise pollution in the ocean and other bodies of water can be highly detrimental to these animals. It can cause hearing loss, disrupt breeding and communication, and lead to disorientation. Furthermore, due to the rise in commercial shipping and offshore drilling, ocean noise has more than doubled in the last six years.
There aren’t many ways we can directly reduce our impact, but by pushing for social change, we can help create more designated quiet zones and establish thresholds for sound levels in certain areas. Creating for Oceanography at Redmond High School
